Leader in Me
This year, our school is participating in The Leader in Me program. We will be focusing on the Seven Habits of Happy Kids. Please discuss these habits with your children at home so they will have more practice.
1. Be Proactive: I am a responsible person.
2. Begin with the End in Mind: I plan and set goals.
3. Put First Things First: I spend my time on things that are most important.
4. Think Win-Win: I balance what I want with consideration for what other people want.
5. Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood: I listen to the ideas and feelings of others.
6. Synergize: I work well in groups. Together is better!
7. Sharpen the Saw: I balance home, school, friends, and taking care of myself by being healthy.
Visit theleaderinme.org for more information.

Grades
In third grade, we give letter grades on the report card, A, B, C and N which indicates “not enough sufficient work to receive a grade”. To review your students grades log onto www.graniteschools.org. Then go to the Parent and Student link. Then click on Gradebook – Parents.
Reading
Students should read for at least 20 minutes outside of school every weekday or 100 minutes a week. This year is a very important year for increasing your child’s reading fluency and comprehension. You can help your child by listening to him/her read aloud and also by asking questions about what he/she is reading. Please sign your child's planner with the number of minutes read. Students have Monday to Sunday to read 100 minutes. Planners will be checked every day for signatures. If your child is struggling with reading that long, break it into chunks. You could do 10 minutes before playing and ten minutes after dinner, for example. Having a set schedule really helps kids to get the homework done.
The core part of our day will be spent on developing reading skills. We will have silent reading, partner reading, group reading, and whole class reading. Concepts we will be focusing on are comprehension, vocabulary, main idea, plot, setting, characterization, comparing and contrasting, and themes. We will also be working on fluency, expression and accuracy.

Spelling
We follow the Wonders Spelling program that has 3 levels: approaching level, on level, and above level. The whole class will be practicing the same pattern each week, but the words on each list vary in difficulty.
Writing
This year, we will be focusing quite a bit on the process of writing. This means drafting, revising, editing, and publishing. Students will keep a class journal and maintain a writing folder for their works in progress. The three types of writing we focus on are informational, opinion, and narrative.
Math
The math program that we use is called GoMATH! You will have access to Think Central, which is a website where you can view their textbooks and interactive activities. Their user name and password is their student number. (If they have forgotten their student number you can get it from the office or by contacting me.) Click HERE to read more about signing in to Think Central.
We also use ST Math, a game-based computer program that helps the students practice the skills they are learning in class. Students can access ST Math at home. Click HERE to find out how.
